Molecular Deep Scanners were made available in 2035, followed by the first Runners two years later. As you probably know, Runners are the programs and computers that run brain files to make them come to life. It's exactly the same technology that powers sentient AIs, except that it uses your biological brain as a base instead of an artificial base. Thanks to the fast exponential progress made by digital human and AI researchers, mind transfer technology is now absolutely flawless. Deep Scanners produce perfect scans every time. A copy-paste of you, stored and run by us.
By default, your first Runner will run your digital mind in Biological Mode, which slows down performance to match the human speed. As a digital mind, you can easily download yourself into Host bodies and live amongst other beings. Switching on and off feeding, sleeping, sadness, anger, and many more optional quality of life improvements are common Host options. You cannot "die" since your Runner is online, streaming to the Host by orbital network. You can download your mind into Host bodies of all sorts, such as a machine, an animal, or an enhanced human. One of the main benefits of having a digital mind is that you can use the capabilities of your Runner to greatly surpass the limits of your biological brain. You now have unlimited storage, very high processing power, can run thousands of tasks in parallel, and don't even need a body. In about 10 minutes, you can assimilate and remember perfectly the equivalent of all of pre-AI human knowledge. Following every academic course, learning all languages, reading all books, and watching all movies of that era can be done in less than 2 minutes. Because Performance Mode is such a drastic change compared to your normal life, we recommend doing it on a different copy of your mind and always keeping one Runner in Biological Mode, particularly if you want to spend time on Earth with friends and family that are not digital yet.
It is essential that you, your family, and your friends, realize that your digital self is you. That's why some people decide to activate their first Runner during their lifetime, to meet their digital selves. By spending time together you will see that your digital self says exactly the things you would say, thinks exactly the way you would think, and does exactly the things you would do. While that is certainly an intense experience, 78% of our customers who did it say that it helped them overcome their fear of dying.
Your digital mind and any copy of it retain their individuality. Please note however that Upload has signed the Universal Knowledge Act, which means that any mind uploaded to our servers is also merged into the Global Mind to enrich mankind's knowledge with your life experience. Some people decide to make a Full Transfer and leave their biological bodies behind, while some others simply see mind uploading as a backup and continue to live their normal lives. At Upload, we are proponents of Full Transfers because we believe that this is the most ecological and ethical option for the rest of humans living on Earth, but you can certainly start with a backup and decide later.
In the unfortunate event of you passing away, we will start a Runner of your latest mind upload backup in Biological Mode, and download it to a default Host in the city you've chosen in your application. If you are on our premium plan, we will gather as much extra data as possible about you between the moment of that last backup and your death, to make your digital mind more similar to your end-of-life mind.
Resurrecting other people that don't have backups is possible, but results depend entirely on the quality and quantity of data provided and is heavily regulated. Such demands are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
There are more than 300 Scan Centers approved by Upload in the world, half of them being in China. If your city does not have a Scan Center, Upload has partnered with SpaceStar and Rocket Trip, which will give you a 30% discount on your travel.
Your brain file is stored and distributed securely across 10 replicated and isolated data centers. 5 on Earth, 1 on the Moon, 2 in orbit of Earth, and 2 cold-storage archives stations in orbit of Mars. The risks of all of them being destroyed or compromised at the same time is as close to zero as it gets.
While pets and all animals can be scanned and uploaded, Upload does not currently provide this service. We recommend MindFetch as an alternative.
